Katherine’s Writing Philosophy

My stories are told from the perspective of my cat Emma. (Yes, she is a real cat, see below). I feel like a cat is the perfect perspective for these kinds of stories because children can relate easily to a precious, fuzzy animal. Cats are like children in the way that they have an imperfect understanding of an adult's universe, including the language barrier. They approach the world like children: with curiosity and an inimitable desire to experience things and learn.

My children's books are about acknowledging life experiences: things that are scary, happy, sad, and joyful. And even if there are trials to overcome, the writing gives you a valuable lesson, a bit of wisdom to take with you into the future, and some humor!

I believe that most children 's books are "dumbed down", and my philosophy is to teach children more words in order to cater to their budding intellects. The books will explain the more complicated words, and it’s recommended that you read them with your child (initially) to answer any questions they might have.

When children learn more precise words, their language skills improve: they speak better, sound more intelligent, and are able to express their thoughts better.

In my books, I also try to introduce an awareness of other cultures, other languages, and peoples. Our society is becoming increasingly global, and children should be aware of the manifold cultures of the world and their contribution to the richness of experience.

Emma is indeed a real cat, and her real life adventures, quirks of personality, and ways of being inspired me to write these books. I adopted Emma from the Wyoming ASPCA Shelter in 2021. I looked at her through the window and thought, oh she is so sweet, with little white socks on all four feet! She she is so QUIET too... boy was she fooling me!

As she was growing and maturing, she started to show her true personality as a very vocal, very active kitty. She often made "guest appearances" on my gaming videos, you could hear her meow in the background.

She's the most talkative cat I've ever had.

Emma is so precious to me, and I love her and Eleanora and Araminta very very much.
